In the bay Area, floods may be caused by heavy precipitation, unusual high tides or failure of levees or retention ponds.

As occurred in the 2005-2006 rainstorms, heavy rainfall results in surface runoff in large quantities which cannot be absorbed or carried within the existing water channels to ponds, reservoirs or the Bay.  Flood conditions result which interrupt normal commerce and levels of service.  Nute Engineering incorporates the following flood control methods into their projects:

  • Design of levees to prevent surface runoff
  • Design of weirs
  • Selection of appropriate design parameters such as design storms of a specified return frequency
